What is the European Accessibility Act (EAA)?

The European Accessibility Act (EAA) takes effect in June 2025 and is a turning point in digital accessibility laws. All digital products are required to meet the accessibility standards outlined in the Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2. The purpose of the act is to improve the accessibility of digital products and services for everyone.

This means that, whether users have visual, auditory, cognitive disabilities, or are part of the ageing population, they can interact with digital products and services without barriers.

What does the EAA mean for mobile apps?

The EAA stipulates that businesses wishing to trade in the EU must be compliant with the regulations laid down by the EAA. This means your app must be fully accessible to all users. You might consider features such as text-to-speech compatibility, high-contrast modes, intuitive navigation, clear and concise content, or videos.

When is the EAA compliance deadline?

The deadline for EAA compliance is the 28th June 2025, from which time all EU states are permitted to take legal action against companies whose digital products, services, or platforms fall short of the WCAG guidelines.

Understanding your app’s current accessibility standards and the changes that need to be made is essential to safely navigate the complexities of the EAA.

Our app accessibility audit and certification process: what to expect

Achieving the correct mobile app accessibility standards can feel daunting when you’re attempting it alone. However, with the help of our team, your app can be fully compliant and accessible in just four simple steps:

Step 1: Initial consultation and app review

We begin with a consultation. This is a chance for us to get to know your app and understand your goals. Whether you’re beginning the app development process or you have an existing app you’d like audited, we’re here to help.

Step 2: Testing and evaluating app accessibility

Our team carries out detailed accessibility testing. We check everything from navigation and usability to screen reader compatibility and colour contrast. We evaluate all of this and more against Web Content Accessibility Guidelines (WCAG) 2.2 to ensure full compliance moving forwards.

Step 3: Reporting and sharing our recommendations

We will provide you with a detailed report explaining which areas of your app are compliant and where improvements could be made. All our recommendations are actionable, helping you make proactive improvements to your app without needing to change the core design.

Added bonus: our expert team can provide additional development support. Whether you want us to supplement your existing team or to work autonomously implementing our recommendations, we’ll make sure the work gets done.

Step 4: Certification and provision of ongoing support

Once all the necessary changes have been made, you will receive a certification confirming your app meets all accessibility standards and EAA guidelines. We can also provide ongoing support to keep your app compliant as accessibility guidelines continue to evolve.

Accessible apps built for enterprise-level businesses

At Brightec, we want to create meaningful technology that positively impacts peoples’ lives, providing valuable solutions to users everywhere. We are immensely proud of our approach to app accessibility, and believe our award-winning results show how far-reaching this approach can be.

Why does accessibility matter?

Creating accessible apps isn’t just about following the rules; it’s about accommodating different user abilities, making technology accessible to everyone. Accessibility has a direct and positive human impact; changing how people access and engage with technology for the better.

This quote from Sir Tim Berners-Lee (Inventor of The World Wide Web) sums it up nicely:

“The power of the Web is in its universality. Access by everyone regardless of disability is an essential aspect.”

Here’s why digital accessibility matters:

Creates an inclusive environment

Focusing on user accessibility during an app’s development or optimisation helps to create an environment that is inclusive of all users. This also broadens your audience reach, helping you connect with new customers and expanding your impact.

Boosts user engagement and satisfaction

The more accessible your app is, the higher customer satisfaction will be for all users. Focusing on simple navigation and clear, concise content helps to drive engagement and increase customer satisfaction across your audience.

Avoids legal and financial risks

Making your app accessible and fully compliant isn’t a tick-box exercise. It avoids the legal risks of non-compliance. The EAA has strict guidelines for all digital products and services. Failure to meet these can lead to severe financial penalties and costly damage to your business reputation. By prioritising accessibility, you can protect your app and your business.

Enhances your brand reputation

Prioritising app accessibility and compliance has the added benefit of enhancing your brand’s reputation. By making your app accessible to all, and considering those who might need extra support, you show people that you care - this, in turn, fosters long-term customer loyalty.
