Environmentally friendly survey app
A beautiful interface to tackle the global plastics problem
Long-term relationships
The Marine Conservation Society is the UK’s leading marine charity, dedicated to protecting our seas. At Brightec we prioritise building long-term relationships with our clients, so we were delighted when MCS asked us to develop a second app for them, following the success of their award-winning ‘The Good Fish Guide’ app.
This time, MCS wanted an app to help tackle the global plastics problem. The society runs the Beach Clean initiative, a national programme of events where volunteers participate in local clean-up initiatives at their local beach and use a paper survey to record the litter they collect. This data is submitted by the event organiser at the end of the day and added to MCS’s national database. The results are used to produce an annual report and educate organisations and academics on marine litter issues, as well as raising awareness of litter impact.
We delivered an iPhone and Android app that can be used by the general public to record litter collection during Beachwatch beach cleaning events, as well as allowing individuals to participate on an ad-hoc basis. As always, we produced a beautifully designed mobile app that matches the client’s brand guidelines and integrates with their existing systems.
The BeachWatch app brings their current clipboard system to the digital world, reducing admin and seamlessly collecting data from the events. Once recorded via the app, the results are automatically uploaded to an MCS server for analysis.
The survey app we developed replicates the previous data entry method and has the functionality for the user to save their results and submit later on if they are offline. It also gives users in multiple locations across the UK access to an easier, paper-free way to participate.
The app integrates maps as well as the MCS calendar of events, so users can easily locate their nearest Beach Clean and retrieve directions to their local beach, whether they choose to submit data alone or as part of an event.
