10 minutes with Emily

Emily is on the cutting edge of communications at Brightec, stitching together everything from web content to events and internal conversations with insight, clarity, and care

If you’re after a good flat white, a walking route that finishes at a pub, or a tour through fashion moments in Paris, our amazing communications coordinator will have suggestions tailor-made for you.

Emily thrives on turning values into actions, as evidenced by her refinement of the Brightec Tone of Voice in her first six months with us. She also gets pretty fired up on organisation, progress and seeing things coming together.

Words that land, stories that stick

It’ll come as no surprise that one of Emily’s top Clifton Strengths is communication. Super skilled in explaining, describing, writing and hosting; she loves bringing ideas to life, breathing energy into events and spinning them into stories to be told.

From flicking through fashion magazines as a teenager, Emily knew she wanted to work with words. She excelled in A Level English and went on to study Linguistics at the University of Sussex. As part of her degree, she spent a year living in the South of France before training as a journalist with The Argus.

A mix of editorial internships followed, including freelancing for local newspapers and V Magazine, as well as communications work for a local church. After years of freelancing (and numerous school runs), Emily was ready to put down creative roots and channel her copywriting and editing skills into something more permanent. We’re thrilled she found that place at Brightec, as our queen of thoughtful communication.

Emily has a deep-rooted fascination with people; intrigued by what makes each individual tick, how to connect with them meaningfully, and shape messages that truly land. It’s this nurturing mindset that underpins her approach to communication, making her a thoughtful and trusted voice across the team.

She knows that most of us have a short attention span and makes it her mission to help everyone extract key information quickly, in a way that keeps it at the forefront of your mind. This superpower is perhaps linked to her innate ability to recognise the unique qualities of each person, crafting words to suit a specific audience in a way that they didn’t even know they needed. We think she’s the perfect fit for this role!

She said,’ I’m so grateful to work somewhere that values people and wellbeing. The culture is unlike anywhere I’ve been.’ She loves the way the job stretches her comfort zone while letting her do something she genuinely enjoys. ‘It’s rare to find that balance.’

More croissant than campfire

In her downtime, you’ll likely find Emily with a good book, coffee in hand, and a new city to explore. Whether it’s sipping wine at a street café, wandering the backstreets of Paris, or people-watching in Soho, her happy place is soaking up the energy and rhythm of urban life.

From the pastel de nata to the perfect flat white, she has a sixth sense for uncovering the best local treats wherever she goes. But don’t let the city scenes fool you. This country bumpkin grew up near Heathfield surrounded by fields, sheep, tractors and a tiny shop that sold Cadbury's fudge bars and not much else. A childhood spent at Ploughing Championships (cheering on her dad) sparked an enduring fondness for sheepdog trials and homebaked cake stalls.

Emily’s more at home exploring a new coffee spot or people-watching in a buzzing city square than trekking across muddy fields. That said, she’s always up for good company and a destination worth the journey, especially if there’s a cosy pub or slice of cake at the end.

With her warmth, wit, and curiosity, she’s a perfect fit at Brightec, even if she’s still recovering from our woodland away day, complete with fire-building and tree-felling. We probably owe her a whole latte coffee for that one.

Put on your thinking cap-puccino

Of course, we asked Emily; ‘If you had a limitless budget, time and technology, what is the one app you’d build?’

If I had limitless budget and tech, I’d invent the Wardrobe Whisperer: an app that scans my wardrobe to see what’s actually clean (so no more pretending that chair isn’t my washing pile), checks the weather for the day, and then serves me five perfect outfit options for the day. With my very early starts, when my brain isn’t exactly firing on all creative cylinders, it would basically be like having a personal stylist on speed-dial to do the thinking for me. If only tech could fold the laundry, too...
